Lent I

February 21,  2010

FROM THE RECTOR

This Sunday marks the First Sunday in Lent and it is a fitting occassion for some changes to the service music at the 10:15 am Eucharist.

This Sunday will begin with the Sung Litany (said at 8 am), in preparation for this season of prayer, penitance and fasting.  For the duration of Lent,  the service music (Kyrie, Gloria etc) will be according to the Merbecke settings of the 1940 Hymnal.  If you're not sure if you know them click on the link to hear the Kyrie , Sanctus and the Agnus Dei.    Those of us who grew up in the Anglican church will know these settings, after all they have been in use since the 16th century!   Those of us who are new to Anglicanism (or at least more traditional forms of Anglican worship) will, I hope, appreciate the beauty and feel of these traditional settings of the liturgy.   If you don't know them, not to worry.  The choir will lead us, and part of what makes them great settings is that they are easy to learn ("catchy" in a Medieval kind of way) .  So get your pipes ready and be ready to make a joyful (if not reserved) noise to the Lord.

I was encouraged to have almost one hundred souls in attendance for our Ash Wednesday services.  If you've not already chosen an act of fasting and denial (giving something up) or an act of devotion (taking something on) for Lent let me encourage you to do so.   As has been our custom, we will offer Stations of the Cross every Wednesday in Lent.  This short service is a helpful devotional aid and I hope that many of you will take advantage of it.  You can find details here.

I look forward to seeing you on Sunday!

Wishing you an abstemious and holy Lent, I remain

yours in Christ,

These new service books will give us flexibility in the service music and might also be used at said services.   Please let me know if you have any comments or suggestions!   - Fr. Rodriguez
