EASTER  IV

April 25,  2010

 FROM THE RECTOR

Alleluia, Christ is Risen!

I hope you share my anticipation for the Bishop's Visit this Sunday for the service of Confirmation and Reception.  Since January I have been meeting with our teenage Confirmands to prepare them for this important sacramental rite  and the meetings have been a great joy and encouragement for me.  We should be proud of these young adults as we prepare to support these persons in their life in Christ  (Book of Common Prayer, p. 416).

The service of Confirmation is an opprortunity for each Confirmand to make a public statement of their faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.  If we are baptized as infants, our godparents make a statement of faith on our behalf.   When we come to the "age of discretion," we are asked to publicly "confirm" for ourselves what our godparents claimed for us as children.  As catholic Christians, we also believe that Confirmation and the laying on of hands by a Bishop actually confers the strength and power of the Holy Spirit for the service of the Lord (BCP, p. 418).  So Confirmation is both an outward affirmation of faith, as well as an actual strengthening of our walk with the Lord.

On Sunday I will present ten candidates to the Bishop: four young adult Confirmands and six adults.  Some are going to be Confirmed and some are going to be Received into the Anglican Communion.    As the Rector of this parish, I am proud that we have raised up so many for the service of Christ, and I pray that each of us will make a special effort to come out and support them this Sunday at 3:00pm.   I look forward to seeing you then.

  Onward and upward!
